Todra Sunrise

African sun floating on a prayer,
Flesh and bone on knees,
Sands of time filtered through waving palm trees.

Heat warms dusty streets,
Red walls glow with retreating night,
Song of the rooster kindles new light.
Berber on a hill,
Black flock in sight,
Smoke rises, twisted tight.

Gash in ancient earth,
Hands and feet tacked on gritty stone,
A connection with Africa, all I've ever known.
